Reconstructive Maxillofacial Surgery
Reconstructive surgery may be performed for those patients requiring specialized reconstruction of bony and/or soft tissue defects. These problems may arise secondary to tumor or cancer surgery, as a result of facial trauma or due to congenital disorders such as cleft lip and palate.
The reconstruction of maxillofacial defects involves complex surgery that may require multiple staged procedures. These surgeries are often performed in conjunction with other medical specialists including plastic surgeons, ENT surgeons, and neurosurgeons. These reconstructive procedures are performed under general anesthesia in the hospital setting. A period of bed rest and limited physical activity may be required.
